Riding Irene
September 04, 2011

The storm hit Saturday evening and lasted until Sunday morning. We received 6 to 8 inches of wind-driven rain in that period but all the horses were dry and safe. By Monday morning, all of the horses were turned out and happily grazing on the new lush grass (at least the grass liked all the rain). Due to the topography of our land and our aggressive pasture management plan, our pastures are in great shape and the horses are back to night turnout and feasting on the new grass.

The only negative was the loss of commercial power in our area for 6 days. However, between our emergency generator and the now free-flowing stream, we had plenty of water for the horses. Everything else was back to normal, including people riding, by Monday. Our preparation and execution helped us ride out Irene.
